'Bhut Jolokia’, the hottest chili of the world is around for many years. It originally grows in the North-East part of India. States such as Assam, Mizoram, Nagaland are in the leading position in originating Jolokia chili. It has also its roots in the countries like Sri Lanka and Pakistan. The Western countries came to know about the taste only from start of this decade. It is now certified as the hottest chili by the Guniess Book of World Record depending on the report that said the taste of Jolokia chili is almost twice that of the Red Savina Habanero that was till then considered as the hottest chili of the world.

New Mexico University researchers tested the Jolokia chili immediately after going through the report in 2005 and their decision was out as Jolokia chili being the # 1 hottest chilli in the world.

The heat of the Jolokia chili can be measured using a High performance or pressure Liquid Chromatography that detaches the compounds and determines them separately. Capsaicin is such an element or compound that provides heat to the chili. The Scoville Scale (SU) using Scoville Heat Units (SHUs) usually rate the quantity of heat.

Pure and natural capsaicin which cannot be found normally has 15,000,000 to 16,000,000 SHUs. Where the closest competitor of Jolokia chili Red Savina Havanero, the old champ has around 350,000 to 580,000 SHUs, Jolokia has 855,000 to 1,050,000 SHUs that is almost double of the previous.

It is now an accepted fact that the increasing of the heat content of the chili to some extent depends on the place where it is growing. There are many people who are showing interest in growing it. They are selecting the places like Florida and Hawaii where the weather is humid combined with sufficient rainfall.

Jolokia chili is famous in different names and translations in different states of India and outside of India. These names as well as the translations show the heat elements of the chili. The list is as follows:

  • In Bangladesh it is known as Naga Morich (Cobra Chili)
  • In Sanskrit it is termed as Naga Jolokia (Cobra Snake)
  • It is famous as Oo-Morok (Tree Chili) in Manipur.
  • In Sri Lanka it is known as Nai Miris (Cobra Chili) and Raja Mirchi (King of Chilis).
